🚨Disney World JUST CHANGED Its Entire Lightning Lane System🚨

This is your official warning. Your Disney World trip is about to look TOTALLY different.

In case you missed it, Genie+ is no more.  As of July 24th the paid skip-the-line service is called Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Individual Lightning Lane is called Lightning Lane Single Pass! That’s not all — you can now book Lightning Lane reservations BEFORE your trip (yes, it’s a lot like FastPass+!). We’ve been preparing to test out the new system and we’re here to share our findings with YOU. Let’s go!

We. Are. READY. Game faces are on. AllEars has a reporter in each Disney World park and we’re trying out several experiments to really understand how the new system works.

First, let’s go over the major changes. If you are familiar with FastPass and Genie+, it’s like those two systems had a baby. Lightning Lane Multi Passes can be purchased before your Disney World vacation. They can be used for one theme park per day and allow up to three advanced Lightning Lane selections and arrival windows at the park of your choice ahead of your visit.

Selections can be made three days before your trip, but that window is extended to seven days in advance of an entire stay (up to 14 days) if you are a Disney World hotel guest. In most cases, you must be on U.S. soil to pre-book these — more on that here.

There is also a tier system at Magic KingdomEPCOT, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios where you can book one attraction in tier one and two attractions in tier two ahead of time. Disney’s Animal Kingdom does NOT have tiers. See a full breakdown of the tiers here.

Expedition Everest Lightning Lane

We’ll have two teams testing out the new system. The first is booking Lightning Lanes for the first day of the system on July 24th! We were not able to book Lightning Lanes ahead of time for the 24th since that’s the day it kicked off, but going forward that will not be the case.

BREAKING: Disney Announces Pricing for NEW Lightning Lane System

Let’s see what it was like booking Lightning Lanes for July 24th. We hit the My Disney Experience app right at 7AM…and y’all, it’s super easy. You can purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass all in one transaction! For Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we checked the Multi Pass option and the Single Pass for Rise of the Resistance.

Then it’s time to make your selections. Disney has a banner at the top that counts down how long it’ll hold these selections and gave us five minutes.

Once we made those selections (Slinky Dog Dash being our Tier 1 pick and Toy Story Mania and Tower of Terror being our Tier 2 picks), it was time to review the details. Everything looks good!

This is also an opportunity to modify your plans. Have a dining reservation? Disney will show it here in your plans but it will still let you book a Lightning Lane at the same time, as seen below.

After you’ve checked and everything is just how you want it, you pay for the service. We highly recommend having a card attached to your My Disney Experience app already since you only have five minutes.

Then you can see your choices in the app. You can choose to “Get Details”, “Modify Selection”, “Cancel Booking”, or “Show Party”.

We clicked “Modify Selection” to see what would happen and it popped up with a new time. By 7:07AM, times for the day had filled up to around 6:25PM and if we clicked “Change to This Time”, it would have modified our original time window.

The second team is booking Lightning Lanes seven days in advance like every other hotel guest using this system will be able to do (a new big perk to staying at a Disney World hotel!).

It works the same way as we showed above. The biggest difference? You have PLENTY of times to choose from. We started by choosing a Tier 1 attraction.

Then we chose two attractions from Tier 2.

And voila! Take a look at how early we were able to grab all three Lightning Lanes through Lightning Lane Multi Pass as a hotel guest.

We were able to grab a very early time slot for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. When we tried booking on the 24th, Lightning Lanes filled up quickly for some team members and later times showed up for other team members. So being a hotel guest is certainly going to give you the upper hand when it comes to snagging an earlier Lightning Lane for this.

For Lightning Lane Single Pass, we could buy both Seven Dwarfs Mine Train for $11 and TRON Lightcycle / Run for $20.

One interesting thing to note — it let us overlap with one of our Lightning Line Multi Pass Selections and with our other Lightning Lane Single Pass for TRON. It’s unclear if this is a glitch or if this will be the norm, but it’s something to be aware of when booking!

  1. one question I have and have not seen anywhere is… If you purchase a LLMP and have MNSSHP tickets, does hte LLMP work during the MNSSHP?
    thank you

    1. Hi Ella! The Lightning Lane Multi Pass is not available during the party because attendance is low and most rides are walk-ons or short waits. The choices available to you will be before the park closes to guests without party tickets.
