Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ Premiere Impacted by Actors Strike

On July 13th, 2023, SAG-AFTRA, the organization that brings together the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, announced that the union is launching a strike.

Earlier this year, the Writers Guild of America issued a screenwriters’ strike, and that strike is ongoing. Now, following failed contract negotiations with SAG-AFTRA, Hollywood actors are also on strike. So, what does this mean for upcoming movie premieres, like Disney’s Haunted Mansion movie? Let’s break it down.

In a recent press conference, SAG-AFTRA explained the union’s decision to strike, noting pay issues with streaming model undercuts and the looming threat actors face with AI. After SAG-AFTRA proposed a new contract to AMPTP (Alliance Of Motion Picture And Television Producers), the contract was rejected.

In light of the recent news, Variety reported that Disney will not cancel the upcoming Haunted Mansion movie premiere in Disneyland.

Ahead of the film’s premiere in theaters on July 28th, Disney announced it would hold a red carpet premiere on July 15th at Disneyland. Currently, the premiere is still set to take place despite the SAG-AFTRA strike. Variety notes that this will be the first world premiere to take place after the strike was announced.

Although the premiere is still set to happen, the stars of the film (Danny DeVito, Tiffany Haddish, Jamie Lee Curtis, LaKeith Stanfield, Rosario Dawson, and others) are not able to take part in the event, per union regulations.
