When planning the special effects for films based on classic attractions at Disney, it’s important to get it “right.” Popular rides like the Jungle Cruise and The Haunted Mansion have a HUGE fanbase.

Disney has been busy with several live-action remakes lately, including Lilo and Stitch and Peter Pan. Now, Disney’s newest live-action remake is coming soon, and we have new details on the film!

When Justin Simeon was casting the newest adaptation of The Haunted Mansion for the silver screen, he knew he had to make a well-balanced decision according to Entertainment Weekly.

The casting for the role of the iconic Madame Leota needed a balance of someone with the ability to be “a little subversive” and “a little funny” in the film translation from the iconic park seance scene to character with major screentime.

“She starts off as one of the relics, one of the items, one of the aspects of the house that has to be discovered, but becomes a functional character and a useful ally in the film,” Simien explains of Madame Leota. His search ultimately led him to a familiar scream queen, Jamie Lee Curtis.

While Jamie Lee Curtis is no stranger to horror-based films this content will be more light than what she’s used to portraying.

While the visual nods to the frightful spirit may be on par with what we’ve seen in the attraction, the storyline for Leota’s character will be “entirely new” with the house itself becoming an integral story piece.

Call in the spirits, wherever they’re at!

Simien said when he was first assigned to the film he wanted to weave familiar aspects of the attraction into what would ultimately translate well into what we see on screen. Subtle touches like the right door knobs, creaky chairs, and even cobwebs in certain places seemed like details he and the filmmakers were on board to nail down.

We don’t know about you but hearing that the director and filmmakers were looking to stay true to the core of what made Haunted Mansion stand out in its own way, has us shrieking with excitement. It will be interesting to see how this translates on film and how true to practical effects they were able to stay and still pull off a fantastical storyline.
