Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is finally here!

Marvel’s latest blockbuster hit theaters this weekend, and it was nothing like fans have ever seen from Marvel before. The movie was already breaking box office records before its release, and now that we’re at the end of its opening weekend, let’s take a look at how much money it brought in!
This morning, Disney called $185M in domestic box office earnings for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, according to Deadline. This makes it the biggest opening weekend of any movie since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic except for 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Globally, the number is even more staggering, with the movie bringing in $450M. This number once again trails only Spider-Man: No Way Home, which made $600.5M in its opening week. And, according to Marvel, the film is currently the #1 movie in the world.

While Mother’s Day is expected to bring a decline in ticket sales according to Deadline, some think that the holiday will bring even more moviegoers to theaters — especially considering that Wanda Maximoff, a character central to the movie, is a mother herself.

While Marvel’s continual box-office success sets a precedent for Multiverse of Madness‘ earnings, there are a few other factors contributing to the massive gross. For one, many big theater chains are up-charging to see Doctor Strange, with some theaters charging over a dollar more than they are for other movies.

This movie was also heavily promoted during the end-credit scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The newest Spidey flick set enormous records, and the first trailer for Multiverse of Madness premiered in the second-end credits scene for the movie. With Spider-Man coming in at the 6th highest-grossing film of all time, it’s safe to say that it exposed a lot of people to the Doctor Strange sequel.
