NEWS: Orlando Airport Flight Cancellations Continue After Weekend of Delays

Over the past few months, we’ve seen nationwide delays and cancelations for flights due to a variety of reasons.

This weekend was projected to be one of the busiest of the year at MCO.

From staffing shortages to bad weather and technical issues, air travel has experienced quite a bit over the past months. And now Spring Break has brought air travel back into news headlines again.

Severe weather moved across the East Coast on Saturday, prompting many flight cancellations. According to the Orlando Sentinel, 204 flights were cancelled at the Orlando Airport between Saturday, March 12th, and Sunday, March 13th. But, an airport official tells the Orlando Sentinel that weather was not the only culprit.

A storm thinned out the crowds at Animal Kingdom on Saturday, March 12.

Personnel shortages and high customer demand reportedly also contributed to the problems. Many frustrated travelers took to social media to complain.

Airport officials say that contrary to what many believe, the December holidays are not the busiest time for the airport — Spring Break is. “This is our Super Bowl,” Tom Draper, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, said in a statement last week.

MCO Spokewoman Carolyn Fennell said airlines are putting stranded passengers on flights as quickly as they can, but with the level of flight cancellations over the weekend, it could take multiple days to catch up. Fennell noted to the Orlando Sentinel, “We’re close to our 2019 volume.. We’re the busiest airport in the northeast corridor. Unfortunately that’s where a lot of that weather was.”
