Although the film was initially slated to premiere in 2020, its release was delayed due to the global health pandemic. Instead, Disney released Free Guy this weekend with a 45-day theatrical release window.

Free Guy has managed to rake in $26 million at North American box offices, according to Variety. This puts the movie at the top of the box office for the week.

Free Guy is one of the first Disney movies released exclusively to theaters since last year — almost every other Disney release in 2020 and 2021 has been to theaters AND on Disney+ with Premier Access, giving movie fans a way to watch movies from home if they didn’t want to go to theaters during the global health pandemic.

David A. Gross, the head of movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment still points out that the movie business is still struggling due to the pandemic. He said, “Moviegoing has shown flashes of strength during the summer, but the delta variant has dampened any sustained improvement above 50%. In a healthy market, movies would be opening considerably higher and holding better.”
