Disney Investor Day dropped a ton of major news bombs last week!

Disney is planning to focus its financial efforts on entertainment content and media. Mainly, the streaming service Disney+ is getting a ton of new content ranging from Marvel to Pixar to animated shows. Among all the new content, it was also announced that Disney+ is getting a price increase next year. We’re comparing Disney’s new price to other major streaming services for context.
Disney+ was launched at a price of $6.99 per month. Starting in March 2021, the streaming platform will cost $7.99. For comparison, here’s a list of popular streaming companies and the current monthly prices. Note that these prices could change by March 2021.
Current Monthly Streaming Service Prices
- Netflix – $8.99 (Basic Cost)
- Hulu – $5.99 (With Ads) $11.99 (Without Ads)
- ESPN+ – $5.99
- Apple TV+ – $4.99
- Amazon Prime Video – $8.99 or $119 annually with Amazon Prime subscription
- CBS All Access – $9.99
- HBO Max – $14.99 or included with HBO Now subscription
- Peacock $4.99
Disney also offers a streaming bundle that includes Hulu and ESPN+. You can purchase the bundle with ad-free Hulu for $18.99 per month or with ads for $12.99.

At the basic price level, Disney+ is lower than Netflix, Amazon, HBO Max, and CBS All Access. While, other companies like Peacock, Apple TV+, and Hulu are beating Disney’s prices. Still, Disney plans to release 100 pieces of new media content every year. Comparatively, HBO Max plans to premiere all 17 of their new movie releases the same day as theatres in 2021. This could be the reason for HBO’s higher price range as well.

The enormous amount of new content may make a subscription to Disney+ worth it in comparison to other services that don’t offer the same promise. (Unless you really love The Office and absolutely need that Peacock subscription.) With more companies turning to streaming services, we’re likely to see more new releases heading straight to your computer rather than theatres.
