Disney+ is about to put a modern spin on the classic tale of Cinderella!
Disney has announced that its upcoming film Sneakerella, will premiere on the streaming service in 2021.
Sneakerella is a musical that tells the story of El (Chosen Jacobs), a sneaker designer from Queens working at a shoe store that once belonged to his now-deceased mother. El, though, has an “overburdened” stepfather and two mean stepbrothers who constantly get in his way. Sound familiar?
After El meets Kira King (Lexi Underwood), the daughter of a basketball star and “sneaker king,” they bond, and with the help of some true Disney magic, El strives to make his own dreams come true. It’s the classic Cinderella story with a twist!
Lauren Kisilevsky, vice president of Original Movies for Disney Channel said, “Sneakerella brings a vibrant, modern approach to a beloved story by suggesting that magic is the result of hard work and determination and exists within each of us. Liz Allen’s unique vision, Lexi and Chosen’s amazing chemistry, the incredible music and the gravity-defying choreography, will bring this movie to life and inspire audiences of all ages.”
Jacobs and Underwood will be joined by four-time NBA champion John Salley in the film, which will be executive-produced by Jane Startz (Ella Enchanted) and Rachel Watanabe-Batton (I Pity the Fool), along with co-executive producer Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum (Ramona and Beezus), who is also serving as director. The film is currently in production.
Sneakerella is slated for a Disney+ premiere in 2021. Stay tuned for more info. Disney+ continues to bring new content to subscribers, including movies made just for the streaming service, like Clouds, which is available to watch right now. We’ll keep an eye on future projects, too!
