NEWS: Florida Public Universities Intend to Reopen for the Fall 2020 Semester

With large shopping and dining districts like CityWalk and Disney Springs reopening to the public, people are starting to discuss the possibility of other places reopening where large crowds may gather, such as sporting arenas and schools.

According to Orlando Sentinel, public universities in the state of Florida currently intend to reopen this fall, and discussions are set to begin soon on exactly how each university plans on doing so.

Each of the 12 Florida public universities will come up with their own plans for reopening by June 23th, and will then be discussed by the Board of Governors. Other state university systems across the country have taken other precautions. For example, the California State University system has already made the decision to cancel all in-person classes for the Fall 2020 semester. The CSU system includes 23 campuses across the state, a few of which are within a short drive from Disneyland Resort.

Back in Florida, some universities are already beginning their reopening process, though with modifications. Privately-owned student housing complexes at University of Central Florida, not far from Universal Orlando Resort and Disney World, said they would reopen for their residents, despite classes still taking place online. What’s unclear at this time is if the universities will be set to fully reopen in time for the first day of the fall semester, where thousands of students gather for classes, sporting events, and other campus-based activities.
