Dave Hunt, the company’s vice president of safety and security, confirmed that beginning September 25th, 2025, new safety requirements will take effect for lithium-powered mobility devices. This includes devices like powered wheelchairs and scooters, according to PEOPLE. Hunt added, “These updates are designed to enhance safety and align with international standards, further protecting our customers and our crew members.”

This change comes in response to the uptick in lithium battery-related fires on planes, per Forbes. Hunt noted, “Lithium batteries have become one of the most common sources of smoke and fire incidents on aircraft.” At this time, these events are still rare, but Hunt added, “By taking proactive steps now, Southwest will be among the first U.S. carriers to adopt these higher standards.”

So, what happens with the new policy? Well, customers will be required to take out all removable lithium batteries from their mobility devices and carry them onto the plane. The change will go into effect on September 25th. Customers who have tickets for flights on or after that date will receive information regarding the change upon purchasing their tickets.

That’s not the only change happening with Southwest around lithium batteries. The airline also announced there will be new size limits that apply to all lithium batteries. Customers will now be limited to 300 watt-hours or less. Don’t panic yet; that change won’t take effect until January 11th, 2026, giving customers a grace period for anyone carrying larger-sized batteries.
