A first-of-its-kind (in the United States) ride opened at Cedar Point last month… and it’s having some issues.

The Sandusky, Ohio-located park — which has long been known for having one of the world’s foremost coaster collections — opened Siren’s Curse on June 28th. Themed after the Sirens of Greek myth, the Vekoma told coaster utilizes a unique track system which features a “broken” piece of track that tilts downward on a central pivot point while holding the train, transferring the train from a horizontal position to a downward-facing position. Upholding Cedar Point’s reputation for record-breaking, the coaster is the tallest, longest, and fastest of its kind in North America, with a maximum height of 160 feet, a 90-degree drop, a speed of 58 mph, and two inversions. Yeah, I’ve been on a lot of attractions over my years visiting and covering theme and amusement parks, but there’s no chance I’m riding that coaster.

While Siren’s Curse opened with a great deal of hoopla leading into the 4th of July Holiday, the coaster faced several issues during its initial weeks of operation.

Problems first arose on the coaster’s opening weekend, when a train car of riders were stuck in the “tilt” position for 10 minutes. On July 19th, a similar incident saw riders stuck at a 45-degree angle for nearly 20 minutes.

In addition, on both July 2nd and July 22nd, the coast stalled, leading to evacuations of the coaster. Riders were forced to walk down the coaster’s evacuation steps from a height of 160 feet.

Park spokesperson Tony Clark told the Akron Beacon Journal that the issues stemmed from the coaster’s safety system. He said, “Its safety system performed as designed, but the ride could not be restarted. Guests were safely escorted off the ride.” Clark also referred to the stoppage as a “standard check engine light type of delay, similar to all of our other rides.”

One of the country’s newest mega-coasters, Cedar Point’s Siren’s Curse, has faced several massive technical issues during its first weeks of operation. Stay tuned to AllEars for more on the evolving theme and amusement park industry.

  1. I rode it on July 2 first thing in the morning, it had no problems when I rode it. However, I did see it stuck up top later that day.

  2. I rode Sirens Curse on July 6th and again on August 4th.. Very smooth..very cool.. no problems.. They did run some empty cars a couple of times on Aug 4th though

  3. The statement that the safety system did it’s job begs the question- Why has it been so frequently necessary & what is being done to correct the issues. Perhaps the concept & technology haven’t synced up yet

  4. It’s completely fine. I rode it on July 23 without issue and will ride again today. It’s had thousands of successful ride cycles. All rides need evacuations on occasion. Especially new rides.

    1. Yeah I rode it last week, it was fun. I do think it’s weird that they put it right next to Valravn when it’s basically just a not-as-good Valravn.

  5. I wouldn’t ride Siren’s Curse either, but I’m wondering if they opened the ride too early. Hopefully, they can fix the safety system so they can restart the ride.

    1. I will be there next week. Hope to ride all the coasters. I just had my 71st birthday, so why not have some fun.

    2. I have rode it numerous times and it is great. It happens sometimes with rides. But the maintenance team is really good and they get it running in the quickest and safest way.
