We can probably all agree that the thing that The Walt Disney Company is most famous for is its movies.

With nearly 100 years of feature-length films under its belt, the media company has enough content to fill its Disney+ streaming service and to drop new movies in theaters multiple times per year. But not every Disney movie is beloved!

We recently reached out to our followers on Facebook to ask them about their Disney movie preferences, posing the question: “What are your Disney movie red flags?”

And you know what? Our followers had some very interesting things to say! Let’s take a look at the most popular responses.

Live-Action

Starting out strong, we’ve got the answer we all expected! Some Disney fans out there are REAL tired of live-action remakes. One person said, “The words ‘Reimagining a Classic'” were a red flag for them.

Several other people agreed, with another saying, “When it’s a remake Disney movie. Why must there be anywhere one to several remakes of the same movie?” In recent years, we’ve seen quite a few remakes of animated Disney films, from Lilo & Stitch to Snow White to The Little Mermaid, the studio has been cranking out the reboots.

Sequel

Another red flag for our followers was the never-ending franchises. Most didn’t mind a sequel or two, but started to get worried when it seems as though Disney’s milking a movie series for as much as it’s worth.

Take Toy Story, for example — the original three movies were incredibly popular, so Disney and Pixar decided to continue with more movies. The fourth started to lose traction, and now some fans are groaning with the news that a fifth movie is on the way.

When the Trailer Reveals the Plot

Another thing that seemed to bother our readers? When the movie trailer reveals too much of the plot. One person said, “When I realized that most of the plot was already in the trailer. Like in Wish, it should have been a huge plot twist that the King did not have the best interests of his people in mind. Otherwise, why bother with the “he’s so great” rhetoric in the first 20 minutes of the movie? But anyone who saw the trailer already knew he was the Bad Guy.”

There’s a fine balance of including enough plot to intrigue fans while also leaving out the most important twists so that there’s plenty of fun left in seeing the movie yourself.

Marketing Problems

Another popular woe amongst our audience was Disney’s marketing problems. Many shared that they wish Disney did a better job of marketing its original movies so that they could make more money at the box office. Some even cited the recent release of Elio.

“When there is no marketing (e.g., Elio). It’s in theaters, and I didn’t even know what it was,” said one reader. Meanwhile, Disney seemed to focus a heavy portion of the marketing budget on Snow White when it released a little while back.

So there you have the answers from our readers about their Disney movie red flags. What would you add to the list?
