It Was Fun While It Lasted: Another Disney Restaurant Is Permanently Closing Soon

When it comes to Disneyland restaurants, many come and many go.

This is especially true in Downtown Disney, which is going through a massive overhaul, meaning that we’ve already seen some restaurants close forever (goodbye Tortilla Jo’s), while we’ve seen new restaurants being opened in the shopping and dining district (hello, Din Tai Fung). However, another restaurant will soon permanently close in Downtown Disney, according to The Orange County Register: Earl of Sandwich Tavern.

The Earl of Sandwich situation in Downtown Disney is a little complicated. Earl of Sandwich originally closed in 2022 to make way for renovations in the area. Then, Earl of Sandwich Tavern opened in 2023 as a full-service restaurant. However, that restaurant will start to lay off its 167 employees starting on July 28th and ending on August 10th. Note that this seems to have always been intended as a temporary location while construction for Porto’s Bakery, which will take over the space, was delayed. Now, though, it seems construction for Porto’s could start soon.

However, the Earl of Sandwich pop-up trailer on the west end of Downtown Disney will remain open, so a location will remain in Downtown Disney while construction is underway on yet ANOTHER Earl of Sandwich restaurant that will include a quick service counter, a sit-down Earl of Sandwich Tavern restaurant, and an upstairs cocktail bar.

So, although the current Earl of Sandwich Tavern location is going away, you’ll still be able to get quick service at the pop-up location, which will probably close once the larger, more permanent Earl of Sandwich location is completed near the Downtown Disney performance lawn. The timeline on that project is currently unclear, though, so we’ll just have to see.
