Does Disney Own Fox?

The very short answer is yes, Disney owns parts of what used to be owned by Fox. However, the real answer is a bit more complicated than that, as Disney does not own ALL of Fox.

So, let’s dive into what Disney owns of Fox and what exactly Fox Corporation is now.

As of 12:02 AM on March 20th, 2019, The Walt Disney Company officially acquired 21st Century Fox. So, while Disney owns 21st Century Fox, there is more to Fox than just 21st Century Fox.

When Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, it acquired 21st Century Fox’s collection of businesses and franchises from Fox Corp. This included Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Fox 2000 Pictures, Fox Family, Fox Animation, FX Networks, National Geographic Partners, Fox’s interests in Hulu, and more.

According to NPR, some notable additions to Disney’s portfolio included Deadpool and the Fox-owned Marvel characters such as the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Disney has also gained iconic shows and movies like The Simpsons, Titanic, and Grey’s Anatomy (although Netflix will still have the episodes until the current deal expires). Disney also got Fox’s 30 percent stake in Hulu, which gave Disney a controlling share of 60 percent.

However, while Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, the Fox Corporation still exists and owns a portfolio of 21st Century Fox’s news, sports, and broadcast businesses. Before the acquisition occurred, a spin-off took place that resulted in portions of 21st Century Fox’s portfolio being spun off into Fox Corporation. Some of these include the FOX News Channel, FOX Business Network, FOX Broadcasting Company, FOX Sports, FOX Television Stations Group, the Fox TV network, and more.

The Fox Corporation is now a stand-alone company separate from The Walt Disney Company, which still operates a variety of entertainment offerings. However, many of the iconic characters and storylines that Fox Corporation once owned are now owned by Disney. But, most of the FOX networks are still owned by Fox Corporation, not The Walt Disney Company.
