It’s been an interesting time to be a Marvel fan, to say the least. Ever since Phase Three and the Infinity Saga ended in 2019, reception to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been all over the place. Sure, there is still major hype and high expectations for some upcoming projects, but the MCU has recently undergone a fair share of disappointment as wellThat’s why the rumors of the next Avengers film receiving a name change aren’t surprising.

Originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynastywe are seeing word that the next Avengers project is dropping Kang from the title as Marvel Studios pivots from focusing on Kang the Conqueror as a Thanos-level threat amid legal troubles and poor box office/critical response.

Speculation first arose last year after Kang actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty in December of one count of reckless assault in the 3rd degree and a charge of harassment as a violation. He was acquitted on two other charges. The incident stemmed back to March 2023, so his future status had been up in the air for quite a while until Marvel Studios officially moved on from Majors following the verdicts.

Regardless, it appears the decision to move away from Kang as the MCU’s latest main Big Bad was made before the trial.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the decision to move off of Kang was made by studio executives after the disappointment of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), in which Kang the Conqueror was the main antagonist. The intention to course-correct was made before the results of Majors’ trial.

The film currently holds a 46% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, the worst out of ALL the MCU films. It also earned $476 million at the box office, which is good on its own but not up to par with other blockbusters in the MCU.

Objectively, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was a blunder for Marvel Studios, and it seems the fallout has prompted some significant change.

So what happens next? The now-untitled Avengers 5 film is likely going through script rewrites and pre-production moves as it tries to meet a 2026 release window, and rumors about a Kang recasting have certainly been prevalent as well. Kang was also an integral character in the Disney+ show Loki, so whether or not we see the character again and in what capacity remains to be seen.

The Kang situation is still fluid and nothing concrete is known at the moment about the future of the Avengers franchise, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted as developments unfold so stay tuned for all the latest!

  1. What Disney says is Bologna, they were already getting rid of Majors because they judged him as guilty with out a trial. if anyone has watched the video of what happened you can clearly see Majors running away from his drunk crazy girlfriend and she was following him, what woman that feels like she is being attacked will keep following someone, and then end up in their apartment with the door locked drunk and laying in a closet when police arrive. something is fishy
