Why Driving to Disney World Will Cost You MORE Right Now

Flying to Disney World can be stressful, but so can driving.

Flying means you’ve got to book transportation to and from the airport and parks, and you also may deal with flight delays and cancellations. However, driving may mean you’re spending hours upon hours in the car with your family, which can be a lot, to say the least. If you’re driving to Disney World soon, there’s something else you need to look out for — gas prices.

Yes, gas prices in Orlando have recently hit the highest they’ve been all year, hitting an average of $3.84 a gallon last Friday, according to Orlando Weekly.

Gas prices have risen about 39 cents a gallon in the past month in Orlando, and the trouble may not be over, according to Fox 35 Orlando. The reason for the rise is thanks to “extreme temperatures along the Gulf Coast that have kept refineries from operating at full capacity and oil prices being significantly higher than a month ago.”

While kids being back in school and the end of major summer travel may help lighten the demand for gas, hurricane season is a major wild card that could cause prices to rise again. Just the threat of the peak of hurricane season may be enough to do so, but Florida residents are warned that the pumps may become volatile if any of the refineries that supply the state are damaged in storms.

So how can you make sure you’re getting the best prices on gas? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Shop around for the best prices in your area, so don’t let your car get all the way on E before you need to fill up
  • Pay with cash
  • Drive conservatively, without excessive acceleration and speeding
  • Remove extra weight from your car
  • Use a gas app like Upside, Gas Buddy, or others that are found on the App Store

  1. I live in Massachusetts and have been tempted to drive to WDW many times – especially since for our last two trips, the flights were very expensive.

However, this past April we left my house at 4:45 am and were in Magic Kingdom by 12:30 pm. If we drove, it would have been 12:30 the next day.

Flights are definitely a hassle and other passengers may not be mindful of others, but it’s tough to add in the extra days of travel and the 20 hours of driving each way.
