An Animated Movie Just Made History…and No, It Wasn’t Disney

Some people love animated films, and others aren’t big fans.

ELEMENTAL, Disney and Pixar’s all-new, original feature film releasing June 16, 2023, features the voices of Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie as Ember and Wade, respectively. In a city where fire-, water-, land-, and air-residents live together, this fiery young woman and go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common. “Elemental” is directed by Peter Sohn and produced by Denise Ream.

Some of Disney’s upcoming releases are live-action, like the new Peter Pan & Wendy film, while others are animated, like Elemental. But an animated film just beat a huge record at the box office, and it’s NOT a Disney film.

Illumination/Universal/Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros Movie came out in theaters two weeks ago and now holds the record for the “best second weekend ever for an animated movie at the domestic box office,” bringing in $87 million, according to Deadline.

The record was previously held by Disney’s Frozen II, which made $85.9M million. It was previously wondered if the film would only do well on its first weekend and fall afterward, but that’s clearly been proven wrong.

  1. Just saw the Mario movie with the kids. It was great, lighthearted and non controversial. Told my significant other that “Disney should take a lesson ” from the Mario movie. It was a great 90 minute escape. Have no desire to see any newly release or soon to be released Disney movies, since they are just live action remakes and lyrical changes, to make everyone happy, lol
