Abuelita’s BACK!

One of our all-time favorite Disney and Pixar films is Coco with its incredible story of family, dreams, and music. While the movie is named after Miguel’s great-grandmother, Coco’s daughter (and Miguel’s grandmother) is named Elena.

As Luca and Alberto are swimming, they spot a boat with the name “Elena” along the side as a nod to Abuelita from the film.

A Famous Disney Movie and Attraction

Disney rides come and go over the years in the Disney Parks. Even though the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction has been replaced by other rides, Luca references the movie with a poster in the piazza!

If you look closely, you can spot the poster for the 1954 film hanging alongside a Roman Holiday poster in the area as well.

Giulia’s Bedroom

While the Italian folk may find sea monsters terrifying, Luca and Alberto are able to become friends with Giulia in the city. As they train together to win an upcoming race, they also take a break in Giulia’s room, where there a BUNCH of Disney references.

There’s an original Le Avventure di Pinocchio book by Carlo Collodi that the 1940 animated feature was based on, as well as a stuffed Donald Duck toy by her bed.

The Luxo Ball Bounces Onscreen

It wouldn’t be a Pixar movie without a reference to its famous Luxo ball, now would it? And, you can spot it on a rooftop towards the end of the film when Luca and Alberto are racing through town.

Another A113 Reference

Speaking of Pixar’s favorite references, the famous A113 Easter egg also made its way into Luca. While the number references the classroom animation students at the California Institute of the Arts used, it’s actually on the train ticket that Alberto gives to Luca in the film.
