Disney Entertainment Starts Two New Initiatives to Celebrate Black History All Year Long

Disney has been working hard to feature their fifth key of inclusion more and more in its parks and entertainment ventures recently.

Soulfully Entertainment

The parks have put on the “Celebrate Soulfully” and “Celebrate HER Story” events in Disney Springs for Black History Month and Women’s History Month. And, now the streaming services will be continuing the tradition all year long!

Disney will be working to amplify Black voices throughout the year by giving more diverse stories a platform to be heard on ESPN+, Hulu, and Disney+. Moving forward, the streaming services will have Black History Always on ESPN+ and Disney+ and Initiative 29 on Hulu. All three of the services will also release new content on the 29th of each month all year long with pieces that are “unique and authentic to each platform.”

Disney+ will feature new YouTube episodes during its first installment of Black History Always with a focus on The Proud Family. The homepage of the streaming service also has the “Celebrate Black Stories” collection that will highlight titles like Soul, Black Is King, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Black Panther, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Soul

Hulu’s Initiative 29 will use the lens of socially-conscious short-form content in its Black Stories hub. Viewable on Hulu’s YouTube Channel and Facebook page, the shorts will be six to eight minutes in length. This month, Ria Thompson-Washington will talk about her role as a voting rights activist and organizer who is the democracy manager at the Center for Popular Democracy. Hulu’s actual streaming platform will add more films, TV shows, and documentaries to its permanent Black Stories hub, including All of Us, Ru Paul’s Drag Race, Malcom X, and Brooklyn’s Finest this month.

ESPN+ will feature A Love Letter to Black Women presented by The Undefeated as its first Black History Always Special, which will honor and celebrate the incredible Black women who have changed our lives for the better.
