The Saga has ended. The galaxy has been saved. But, do you know the whole story?
Marvel Comics is releasing a five-issue adaptation of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker this summer, and it’s set to expand upon the epic conclusion to the nine-episode saga! What unrevealed stories will be revealed when this limited series hits shelves?
Marvel and Star Wars go way back, long before Disney acquired both franchises. In 1975, two years before the release of A New Hope, Lucasfilm persuaded Marvel legend Stan Lee to publish a Star Wars comic book to stir up publicity for the film’s upcoming release. Lee refused at first, due to the poor performance of movie-tie in comics in the past, but eventually agreed on the condition that Marvel would keep all profits from the sales until 100,000 issues were sold; a seemingly impossible goal in Lee’s eyes. The first issue, adapting the beginning of A New Hope, was published in April of 1977, a month before the release of the film. Needless to say, they blew past 100,000 sales almost instantly.
The Marvel Star Wars series soon deviated from the films, covering over 100 issues, before going dark until 2015. Now, Marvel is the main publisher of Star Wars comics, with series like Darth Vader and Doctor Aphra thrilling audiences worldwide.
The new adaptation is set to cover the events of the 2019 film. Writer Jody Houser (who also writes the TIE Fighter series of comics) has announced plans to include brand-new material in the adaptation.
“As a lifelong Star Wars fan, it was an honor to be asked to be a part of wrapping up the Skywalker saga with Marvel Comics,” Houser said. “We have some fun plans to add scenes and material that weren’t seen in the movie.”
One storyline we’re hoping to see in the new comic? The bond between General Leia and Rose Tico.
Many fans were disappointed that Kelly Marie Tran’s character was relegated to such a minor role in the film, after her central spot in The Last Jedi. Disney claims that this was due to Rose’s role as an emotional anchor at the Resistance Base, featuring in many scenes with Leia. Unfortunately, Carrie Fisher’s passing forced Disney to rely on composite footage and CGI to create these scenes, which ultimately proved to be unsatisfying. As a result, Rose’s role was largely cut from the film, while scenes with Leia relied on archival footage.
Either way, we won’t find out what happens until the series drops this June!

They showed Episode IX on a cruise I was recently on. I left after an hour. It was terrible.
