Even Supervillains Can Have A Midlife Crisis: Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is Coming to Hulu!

He’s a Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing… and also one of the most ridiculous looking supervillains in Marvel history. Meet M.O.D.O.K.

Psychic monstrosity, giant headed freak, ineffectual father… M.O.D.O.K can be a fearsome villain, but his new series on Hulu is taking a decidedly more comedic route. Can MODOK survive a midlife crisis, corporate restructuring, and Silicon Valley tech speak?

Marvel recently revealed the cast of the new series, which combines supervillain antics with sitcom comedy! M.O.D.O.K (Patton Oswald) is a megalomaniacal supervillain and leader of A.I.M., one of the most notorious organizations in the Marvel Universe. Unfortunately, he’s also managed to run his organization into the ground, costing him his coveted position as leader. Not to mention the fact that his family life at home is crumbling….

His wife Jodie (Aimee Garcia) is discovering new fame as a lifestyle influencer, and is pursuing her independence, pushing her away from her negative, big headed husband. His son Lou (Ben Schwartz) is overly confident, but doesn’t seem to fit into any mold, causing M.O.D.O.K. to project his insecurities onto his awkward and ambitionless offspring. His daughter Melissa (Melissa Fumero) has inherited the “terrifying big headed monster” gene, but has inexplicably become queen-bee of her school and a figure skating star… but she desperately wants her father’s approval.

At A.I.M., M.O.D.O.K. is forced to sell a controlling share in the company to GRUMBL, a Silicon Valley tech firm. GRUMBL sends Austin (Beck Bennet), a “post-merge-intergration-consultant” to serve as M.O.D.O.K’s new boss, as the evil schemes of A.I.M. are over taken with a much more effective form of world domination… capitalism.

M.O.D.O.K.’s main ally at work Monica Rappaccini (Wendi McLendon-Covey), Scientist Supreme of A.I.M. and his former arch-rival. Monica believes she should be in charge, and relishes M.O.D.O.K.’s suffering… until her own experiments are infringed upon. Now she and M.O.D.O.K. have to work together to reclaim A.I.M. from GRUMBL’s corporate interests… when they aren’t stabbing one another in the back.

The Super Adaptoid (Jon Daly) is an android that originally appeared as an adapting rival to the Avengers… but is now little more than M.O.D.O.K’s assistant. Adaptoid would love to live, feel, and create, and dreams of overwriting his programming to kill M.O.D.O.K., but he can’t help but admit he kind of likes the guy… a little. Finally, Gary (Sam Richardson) is a “Beekeeper” – a generic henchman at A.I.M. who remains deeply loyal to M.O.D.O.K., even as he plummets through the ranks.

An exact release date has yet to be announced. We don’t even have official images from the show yet, so the characters will probably look completely different than these images. However, this isn’t the first time a superhero license has turned to comedy. D.C. has tried the sitcom approach twice in the recent past, with the short lived Powerless and the far more successful Harley Quinn.  Will M.O.D.O.K. prove to be a success? Is it even canon to the MCU? We’ll just have to wait and see.
