Cirque du Soleil’s Big Top Opens at Dodger Stadium with “Volta”

Cirque du Soleil fans impatient to see their upcoming show Drawn to Life coming to Disney Springs this March have the opportunity to see their first sports-inspired show Volta under the Big Top at Dodger Stadium right now.

With an overreaching theme of Transformation, Volta follows the journey of Waz–a cubicle dweller whose monotonous existence amongst the isolated, technology-dependent Greys is upended by an encounter with the Freespirits who illustrate a lifestyle free from the shackles of rules and expectations.

As the show progresses, Waz must rediscover the individual he was and find the courage to accept his differences and share them with the world.

While the show lacks the elaborate set pieces found in the Cirque spectacles that have their own permanent installations, there is no lack of spectacular performances of incredible physical strength and agility.  The acts traditionally found in their shows such as aerial performances and tumbling are interspersed with performances inspired by urban streets sports, such as double-dutch jump roping and BMX acrobatics.

While the acrobatics are easy to appreciate, the storyline is a little harder–Cirque shows are always a little abstract and Volta is no exception.  While details for the plot have clearly been well-developed in all the supporting materials for the show, I would not have picked up on much of it from the first viewing.  Still, if you’re not looking for an extensive narrative and want a night out to be amazed at how much more coordinated and in-condition people can actually be, Volta is a fun bet.

Volta is performing under the Big Top at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles through March 8, 2020 and at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa March 18 through April 19, 2020.  Tickets, starting at $49, are available for purchase by visiting cirquedusoleil.com/volta or calling 1-877-9CIRQUE (1-877-924-7783).
