Just as runners are arriving in Disney World for the Disney World Marathon Weekend that kicks off on January 10, Chiquita brand has announced a new banana peel recycling program.

This program is a part of Chiquita’s sponsorship of runDisney’s  2018-2019 season and its commitment to sustainability.

During the races this weekend, Chiquita will donate more than 100,000 bananas to runners and spectators.  Chiquita branded waste bins will be placed in strategic locations in the finish line areas to maximize banana peel recycling by runners and spectators.

If all peels are recycled, the new bins and process, which will be used for the entire 2019 runDisney series, has the capacity to divert upwards of 14 tons of food scraps (28,000 pounds of banana peels) from landfills and turn them into electricity and fertilizer.
