We’ve taken a few long haul flights recently, and we think we’ve figured out how to get at least some rest on an airplane, thanks to things we pack in our carry-on bag.

But…what if you could book some time in a bunk bed that lies flat, basically guaranteeing a more restful environment? Well, Air New Zealand will soon offer these bunk bed arrangements on flights starting on May 18th.
Meet the Economy Skynest, the first-ever sleep pods designed for airplanes. Skynest will have six individual lie-flat “nests” designed for Economy and Premium Economy passengers, basically like bunk beds, that you can book for four-hour sessions to grab some sleep while on a long flight. Skynest will be available soon on select flights between New York and Auckland, New Zealand, as of May 18th.

So here’s how it works. You’ll book a seat on an Air New Zealand flight like normal, but you can add on a four-hour Skynest session for an additional fee. Sessions are planned outside of meal service, and you’re only allowed one session per customer. Each Skynest comes with a full-size pillow, sheets, and a blanket. You’ll also get a complimentary amenities kit with an eye mask, earplugs, socks, toothbrush and toothpaste, and hand cream.

Each Skynest also has a privacy curtain, ambient lighting, space for storing small items, USB charging outlets, a ventilation outlet, and a seat belt. There is also a call button if you need to contact the cabin crew. A four-hour session starts at around $291.
It seems like more airlines are offering options to economy passengers on long flights to make them more comfortable. United Airlines just started offering a Relax Row, where you can purchase a full row of seats that can transform into a couch. It will be interesting to see how other airlines follow suit.

We’ll keep an eye out for more airline news, so check back with AllEars again soon for more.
