Disney Files “Confidential” Permits to Build NEW ‘Avatar’ Land

Disney fans have been pretty focused on all the changes coming to Disney World in the next few years, but there are some major overhauls planned for Disneyland Resort as well.

One of those changes is a new Avatar-inspired land coming to Disney California Adventure. It’ll be replacing Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue, and now we’ve got more details about the upcoming construction.

The Orange County Register reports that Disneyland has filed confidential demolition permits with the city of Anaheim to tear down Mike & Sulley to the Rescue. The permits also include the demolition of the Hollywood Lounge beverage stand.

Disneyland officials have confirmed that the permit “supports long-term work to enable expansion projects in the Hollywood Land area.” The permits don’t include start dates for the construction, though the ride won’t close until 2027.

The Avatar land is in the early stages of development and isn’t expected to open until 2028 or 2029. The Monsters, Inc. ride was originally scheduled to close in 2026, but the date was pushed back a year so that a ride option for young families remains in the park as long as possible.

Disney has already shared concept art of the new Avatar land, which will be inspired by Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: Fire & Ash, and the 4th and 5th upcoming Avatar films. The scenery looks distinctly different from what we have at Pandora in Animal Kingdom.

The land will also feature an “innovative” boat ride that’ll take visitors through a Pandoran jungle. We’ll be excited to check it out!
