After a somewhat contentious political process, the DisneylandForward long-term expansion plans were approved by the City of Anaheim in 2024. This has led to several projects, including an expansion of Avengers Campus that will see the addition of the long-gestating Avengers E-Ticket attraction, Avengers Infinity Defense, and the Stark Flight Lab attraction, a Coco boat ride, a new transportation hub, and our focus today: Avatar.

Back at the 2024 D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event  Disney confirmed that California Adventure will be getting a NEW Avatar-themed area that’s inspired by Avatar: The Way of Water and upcoming films from the franchise.

At the time, it was said that the area will include a brand-new Avatar ride that will take guests on “An excursion in search of majestic natural wonders that can only be found on Pandora.” It’s a boat ride that travels through valleys to open seas to creepy caves. Thanks to the concept art Disney shared, we can see that the ride vehicle looks to seat four people across with an overall six rows of seats.

Now, don’t worry. Even though it’s a boat ride, it looks like this will be a significantly different experience from the Na’vi River Journey ride currently at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In fact, it looks much closer to the acclaimed version of Pirates of the Caribbean at Shanghai Disneyland

As all this was released, the biggest question for many was where this Avatar expansion would go in California Adventure.

Disney finally gave their answer in the summer of 2025, confirming that the new Avatar land and attraction would be taking over a large portion of California Adventure’s Hollywood Land, including the area currently occupied by Mike and Sulley to the Rescue.
