Breaking this Disneyland rule could result in some serious tears.

While Disneyland is one of the most visited theme park resorts in the world, there’s no getting around the fact that it caters heavily to Southern California locals and Disney enthusiasts who visit multiple times per year. As such, its annual pass program — the Magic Key pass — is an incredibly popular and cost-effective way to visit the resort many times over the span of a year. However, unlike other theme parks in the area that offer annual passes, Disneyland’s Magic Key program works on a blockout AND calendar availability model that has its own set of reservation rules — rules that (if broken) could result in a temporary BAN.
The Magic Key pass provides tiered options that supply varying levels of discounts, perks, blockout dates, and the number of theme park reservations one person can have at any given time. For example, the most expensive pass lets guests hold up to 6 theme park reservations at one time, while the lowest — the Southern California resident-exclusive pass — lets you hold up to only 2. Since the resort reopened during the COVID-19 pandemic, you can’t get into either Disneyland Resort park without a reservation, and missing a reservation can be devastating.

Because Disneyland continues to operate on a reservation system for both Magic Key holders and regular guests alike, reservations are treated like gold. Days often sell out/fill up, and folks who wanted to get a reservation can be out of luck. As a result, Disney has implemented a way to deter Magic Key holders from making as many reservations as possible without the intent of using each one.

Known as the Three-Strike Rule, Disneyland lets Magic Key holders miss up to 3 reservations before punishment is put into effect. However, this rule isn’t as cut and dry as it sounds.

If a Magic Key holder has a reservation and does not show up for that reservation date, a strike is applied to that account. According to the official terms and conditions, however, if you do not show up for 3 reservations in any 90 days, you will not be able to make any new reservations or modify any existing reservations for 30 days.
With that said, existing reservations during that time window WILL NOT be canceled.

So let’s put this rule into a real-life scenario. Let’s say you’re sick in February and decide to stay home instead of going to Disneyland on a reservation date. You will get one strike on your account. Starting with your first strike, a 90-day window opens where two more strikes result in a RESERVATION BLOCK. After 90 days, that first strike disappears. So when you go back in October, you won’t see that strike anymore.

However, let’s say you booked five straight days in February, but you missed the first three reservations. You can still go on the last two, but you’ll have to wait 30 days before you can make more reservations. You’re effectively TEMPORARILY BANNED from making any more theme park reservations. You can still buy a ticket and go in (so you’re not banned from the parks themselves), but you’re still paying for your Magic Key on top of the extra tickets you’re buying.

As a reminder, you can check how many strikes you have on the Disneyland app, and you can currently cancel or modify your reservation up until 11:59 PM Pacific Time on the night before your reservation.
However, if you decide not to check into a park on the day of your reservation, this is considered a no-show. You CANNOT cancel reservations on the day of. You’ll want to cancel at least the night before so you won’t have to worry about this policy.

If you are struggling with the reservation system and are worried about the strikes but don’t want to have a full Disney day, you can check in to whichever park you made the reservation for before 11 AM, or either park AFTER 11 AM. Simply scan your pass, walk in, and then immediately walk out.
Yes, it’s a pain to drive all the way out there, park, and go through security. But it still counts as you upholding your end of the reservation bargain.

Disneyland’s reservation system has been around for nearly six years now, but it’s still subject to change. If it does, you’ll be the first to know!
