Winter weather throughout multiple states is significantly affecting flights happening all over the country. This includes Orlando, though none of the winter weather is hitting the state of Florida.

While the snow, ice, and freezing rain are hitting numerous southern states, including Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and even parts of Texas, Florida has been spared the weather, but NOT the flight issues. When planes can’t get from one state to another, delays and cancellations pile up quickly. That’s how, despite no winter weather in Orlando, MCO Airport has seen over 400 flight cancellations today alone.
According to CBS News, airlines have cancelled over 10,000 flights on today, Sunday, January 25th, ALONE, which is the largest number of closures seen in a single day since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. That’s double the number of flights that were canceled on Saturday, and with the winter weather continuing, it’s looking like more flights may be canceled in the coming days. More than 1,800 flights have already been canceled for Monday.

The freezing rain, sleet, and snow aren’t the only concerns, though, according to the National Weather Service, which has warned that extremely cold air is to follow the storm, which could bring damaging wind and tornadoes across the eastern Gulf Coast throughout Sunday as well. Due to the winter weather, airports in Dallas, New York City, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Charlotte, and more were expecting to see disruptions.

So, how is this affecting Orlando, since none of the winter weather is reaching that far south? Well, according to FlightAware, 418 flights have been canceled today, and 58 are delayed, with numbers climbing. While flights may be able to take off from Orlando with little to no issues, if they know they aren’t able to land at their destination airport, and if other airports aren’t able to get their flights TO Orlando, the flights can’t get into the air. It’s possible we’ll be seeing more delays and cancellations over the next few days as things get back to normal.
