U.S. Issues New Travel Warning for Iconic Disney Movie Location

Fans of Disney’s Indiana Jones films (which are all coming to Disney+ in January!) may know immediately, just based on the background, that Rose City in the country of Jordan is prominently featured in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

This film is really what put this incredible spot on the map for tourists to visit, and since the film’s release in 1989, the Rose City in Petra, Jordan is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World (as voted on in a popular 2007 poll). However, if you’ve been dreaming of visiting this new tourist site, right now isn’t a great time — here’s why.

The U.S. Department of State has now issued a Level 2 travel advisory for the country of Jordan, as of December 18th. Citizens are encouraged to exercise increased caution in the country due to terrorism, and some areas have increased risk. It’s recommended you avoid travel to the following areas due to being at a Level 4 threat:

  • Mansheyat al Ghayyath, Ruwayshid, and the border with Syria and Iraq due to the risk of terrorism and unrest
  • Designated Syrian refugee camps in Jordan due to Government of Jordan’s restrictions on entry into these camps
  • Rusayfah city due to the risk of terrorism and crime
  • The Baqa’a neighborhood of Ayn Basha due to risk of terrorism and crime

It’s also recommended that you reconsider travel to Ma’an city and designated areas of Ma’an Governorate due to the risk of terrorism and crime, and Zarqa city due to the risk of terrorism and crime.

Rose City is located inside the city of Petra, and is a gorgeous spot to travel to in order to take incredible photos. It was also featured in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), which follows Indiana Jones as he follows in his father’s footsteps after he went missing going for the Holy Grail, and then finds himself up against the Nazis again to stop them from obtaining its powers.

If you are traveling to the country soon, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings, and avoid large, crowded areas (especially indoors) where possible.
