If you’re planning a cruise past July 1st, listen up.

This new fee is going to change how you travel.
According to AP News, in December, Mexico’s congress approved a $42 immigration fee for every passenger docking in the country.
Previously, cruises avoided this fee because passengers were considered “in transit” when not staying overnight. However, as a popular cruising port, this additional fee will add a lot to your trip.

Every member of your party will have to pay the additional $42, most of which will go toward supporting Mexico’s military.
The tax was originally supposed to start on January 1st, but it has been moved to July 1st, 2025, after a meeting with the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association and the Mexican government. The non-profit trade organization is trying to remove the tax because it “more comprehensive measures are required to address broader concerns about the tax’s devasting impact on cruise tourism, Mexico’s economy, and the livelihoods of its coastal communities,” according to ABC News.

The $42 is 213% higher than the average costs of Caribbean ports, and if cruise lines decide not to dock in Mexico, this can negatively impact the country’s economy.
Disney Cruise Line’s The Disney Wonder, which departs from San Diego, California, often stops in Ensenada, Mexico, on its three- and four-day cruises. The Wonder’s seven-night cruise usually docks in Puerto Vallarta, Ensenada, and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

If you’re planning on cruising after July 1st and heading to Mexico, be aware that you might be charged an additional tax, raising the price of your cruise!
