Get ready folks — we’ve got some good news about Disney+!

During the earnings call for the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, Disney revealed an update about pricing that you’re going to love. Let’s get to the details.
As usual, before the earnings call itself, Disney CFO Hugh Johnston went on CNBC. During this time, Johnston revealed that “current pricing is going to be in place probably for the next 12 months.” No price increases? For 12 months? We’re listening…

Johnston continued by saying that pricing will steadily increase over a period of years instead of a dramatic increase. This halt on price increases is likely because Disney’s streaming is now profitable due to the previous price increases.
Let’s take a look at the data. For the first fiscal quarter, this segment’s operating income increased by $0.8 billion to $1.7 billion. When it comes to Direct-to-Consumer financial contributions, operating income went from $431 million to $293 million.

Johnston also gave some insight into the future of Disney+ saying, “The way to think about Disney+ in the future is it’s going to be the portal into all things Disney. It delivers entertainment. It delivers news. It delivers sports. And in the future, it will deliver many other things, as well.”

Disney+ saw a decrease of 0.7 million subscribers vs the previous quarter bringing the total subscriber count to 125 million. However, Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions combined saw an increase of 0.9 million with 178 million.
When asked about subscriber growth for the rest of the year, Johnston said his expectation is to continue to grow this year. As Disney adds more of its new movies like Moana 2 (which was a huge box office hit) to the service and password sharing continues to crack down, they expect more and more subscriber growth.

During the previous earnings call, Disney had indicated that increased pricing could be on the way soon. Disney’s CFO (Hugh Johnston) indicated that Disney is looking to “continue to increase pricing based on the value we’re providing.”
This is just one of the latest changes anticipated for/being made to Disney+. We’ve also seen new show revivals announced, the addition of an ESPN tile on the service, and even exclusive perks revealed for Disney+ subscribers.

We’ll continue to keep an eye out for Disney+ updates so stay tuned for all the latest!
