When you step into a Disney theme park, you’re in a world that’s all of Disney’s making — and soon that environment will become even more interactive and immersive.

We recently reported on a new patent filed by Disney that could hint that the company wants to make things more virtual for guests by creating a Theme Park Metaverse.
Today, after Disney’s Q1 Earnings Call, CEO Bob Chapek expressed excitement to CNBC about the metaverse concept. He said:
“To me, it’s a third dimension of the canvas that we let our creative people paint. And it’s going to take all the great things that we as a media company have with Disney+ and use that as a platform for the metaverse but at the same time we have something that no one else has and that’s the physical world, a world of our parks. And so, if the metaverse is the blending of the physical and the digital in one environment, who can do it better than Disney?”

The idea is to take Disney’s storytelling and add in digital, data, and interactive features even beyond what it’s already doing. For example, there is already a way for guests to interact even more with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge by using the Play Disney Parks App.

Guests will likely to continue to be able to use their phones to interact with Disney Parks, but wearables, such as the upcoming interactive MagicBand+, will also be an integral part of the experience.

All of this will be part of a “Theme Park Metaverse” that will connect guests to the parks in ways they haven’t been able to before. So it’s likely future attractions will integrate more of this technology to give guests an unprecedented experience in the parks, but also eventually at home, too!
