Since its inception, Disney’s subscription-based streaming service Disney+ has been a pretty big success. Subscribers have access to a wide variety of content, and many believe that Disney+ provided the Walt Disney Company with a major source of income during the pandemic.

The Disney+ platform is home to exclusive, original content, classic Disney films, and even content from other outlets like National Geographic. But Disney (famously) never stops innovating, and now it sounds like Disney+ might be headed in a new direction.
According to reports by TechCrunch, for the first time today, Disney+ tested new livestreaming capabilities. Disney livestreamed the 94th Oscar nominations event. The nominations were also livestreamed on Hulu, ABC News Live, and several other platforms.

For now, Disney has not shared any information on their future plans for livestreaming. In a statement provided to TechCrunch, a Disney spokesperson said, “We performed a test for livestreaming capabilities on Disney+ in the U.S. with this morning’s Academy Award nominations. We are pleased with the results and will continue to test as part of our ongoing and iterative approach to deliver the best user experiences to consumers.”

This news comes just one day before Disney’s Q1 earnings call. At the past three earnings calls, Disney reported consistent Disney+ subscriber growth, with 118.1 million subscribers as of October 2nd, 2021.

Could this mean Disney is considering the idea of livestreaming sports? Or maybe they have bigger plans — we’ll have to wait and see! In the meantime, stay tuned for all the latest Disney news, and look out for updates during Disney’s 2022 Q1 earnings call!
