Whether you grew up watching Star Wars or became a fan as an adult, you’ve probably dreamed of having a lightsaber since you first saw one appear on screen!

There have been many replica lightsabers made for fans of the shows and movies. Disney even has their own line of “legacy lightsabers” available for sale online and in Galaxy’s Edge. And speaking of Galaxy’s Edge, fans can travel to Savi’s Workshop to build their own saber as a Jedi would. But, while these sabers are still classified as very realistic-looking toys, there’s now a lightsaber made by a YouTube creator that actually works!
YouTuber James Hobson from Hacksmith Industries recently created a lightsaber with a retractable plasma blade that burns at 4000 degrees Fahrenheit! The protosaber has an external power source that the user wears in a backpack, and it can cut through steel.
Guinness World Records shared a video of the saber in action on Instagram (@guinnessworldrecords), as this saber is the first retractable proto-lightsaber ever made!
By using different salts, the saber can change colors — the blade can turn blue, green, red, yellow, and amber. It’s powered by a tank of propane mixed with oxygen, and Hobson hopes to eventually give it a longer-lasting and more mobile fuel tank.

Hacksmith Industries is a company that takes fictional ideas from comics, movies, and video games to turn into real prototypes, and if this is the caliber of work that they create, then we can’t wait to see what they come up with next!
