The fifth Indiana Jones movie is set to begin filming this summer, with Harrison Ford reprising his role as the world’s most famous archaeologist. However, there’s one major contributor to the franchise that won’t be returning.

Steven Spielberg, the famed director of the Indiana Jones franchise, is stepping back to the role of producer to pass the famous whip to a new generation. In his place, James Mangold (Ford v. Ferrari) is currently in talks to direct the latest film in the epic franchise.

According to a report by Variety, Spielberg’s decision to step down was entirely his own. This would be the first film in the franchise not directed by the world-famous filmmaker, whose latest film, West Side Story, is currently in post-production.

Spielberg’s previous Indiana Jones film, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was an international success, but faced mixed reviews due to the radical new direction it took the franchise. Currently, the film is set to be released sometime in 2021, though the change in directors may lead to delays.
