When Will Universal Orlando Officially ABANDON This Restaurant?!

Something big is happening in Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure — and it might spell trouble for one of the park’s most iconic restaurants.

Mythos Restaurant

Recently, Universal filed a permit for the demolition of nearly five acres in The Lost Continent section of the park, which is already home to several closed attractions. With construction walls seemingly about to rise, many of us are wondering what that means for Mythos, the full-service restaurant that has long stood as a centerpiece of this area. Could this spot be on the chopping block — or is Universal Orlando keeping it around for now? Let’s break down what’s happening and what it could mean for the future of Mythos.

The Lost Continent Is Disappearing Before Our Eyes

The Lost Continent has always been a fascinating corner of Islands of Adventure. When the park opened in 1999, this land was filled with high-concept attractions, live stunt shows, and intricate theming inspired by ancient myths. Over time, though, much of that has quietly faded away.

The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad stunt show closed back in 2018, and Poseidon’s Fury permanently shut down in May 2023. That left The Lost Continent with only a few shops, a couple of quick-service eateries, and Mythos, the restaurant that’s often been hailed as one of the best theme park dining experiences in the world.

Poseidon’s Fury

Then, earlier this fall, Universal confirmed what many fans had suspected. Director of Public Relations Kristen Smith told the Orlando Business Journal that “in the coming months, there will be construction activity in Lost Continent as part of site planning to ensure the area is ready for any future developments.”

What’s going to happen with this area?

And when we combine that statement with the new demolition permit for 4.9 acres of land — roughly the combined footprint of the old Poseidon’s Fury and Sinbad show buildings — the writing on the wall seems pretty clear. Big changes are coming.

So, Where Does That Leave Mythos?

Well, that’s the million-dollar question. While The Lost Continent, as we know it, seems to be fading away, Mythos doesn’t appear to be within the specific area listed on the demolition permit. The restaurant sits just across the walkway from the former Poseidon’s Fury, meaning it’s not directly inside the five-acre zone that Universal plans to clear.

So for now, it looks like Mythos is safe — at least, in the short term. And honestly, it makes sense for Universal to keep it that way. While the rest of The Lost Continent has dwindled over the years, Mythos has continued to draw guests. Its towering rockwork exterior, cascading waterfalls, and Mediterranean-inspired menu give it a level of theming that still feels impressive even after 25 years.

Plus, Universal benefits from having a sit-down restaurant in that section of the park while other development projects ramp up. When the bulldozers move in, Universal will likely want to keep dining capacity high — especially during peak seasons. We could also see the restaurant close for interior work even if the restaurant isn’t demolished.

Could Mythos Survive the Makeover?

Here’s where things get interesting. While Mythos probably won’t be demolished immediately, it might not fit the long-term vision for the park once new attractions are built.

Mythos Restaurant

The restaurant’s entire design is rooted in the ancient, mythical style of The Lost Continent. The facade looks like a mountain temple carved by the gods, and the interior matches with sweeping, cavern-like architecture. If Universal replaces The Lost Continent with a new IP-based area, it’ll be difficult to keep Mythos as-is without a major re-theme.

Could it be transformed into something new, rather than torn down entirely? Possibly. Universal has a history of reusing strong structures and giving them fresh life. But a full re-theming would take time, resources, and a clear creative direction — which may not be decided until after the demolition phase wraps up.

For now, Mythos feels like a “wait and see” situation. Universal may let it operate as long as possible before the surrounding construction forces a closure.

What’s Next for The Lost Continent

With the demolition of the Sinbad and Poseidon areas all but confirmed, The Lost Continent as an original land is likely entering its final chapter. That said, Universal has not announced what will replace it. Fans are speculating everything from a new Legend of Zelda area (which has been rumored for years) to a smaller, more immersive expansion tied to an existing property.

Whatever comes next, it’s clear Universal is preparing to reshape this section of the park for something big. And as for Mythos? It may stand as the last reminder of what once was — at least for now.
