While Epic Universe has plenty to appeal to Universal fans — from an East Coast installation of Super Nintendo World to a whole new Harry Potter experience– there is perhaps nothing more geared to them than Dark Universe, the first-ever land dedicated to Universal’s Iconic Monsters, including Dracula, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein.

Dark Universe’s centerpiece is Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experience, a massive dark ride that features an all-star team of the studio’s horror characters. So the question is, especially for the “scaredy cats” amongst us, just how scary is this monster-centric attraction?
*Before moving forward, just have to clarify ONE MORE TIME: There are SPOILERS coming up for Monsters Unchained.*
Let’s start with the basics on Monster’s Unchained. Set inside the ruined manor of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, the ride’s story follows his descendant, Victoria Frankenstein, who has captured many of the Universal Monsters with the aid of her own version of her ancestor’s monster, as well as her assistant Igor. The ride’s queue is full of lore regarding the monsters, their respective captures, and Vitoria’s obsessive quest to reclaim her family’s legacy.

Once you reach the loading platform, you board a vehicle that sits atop a KUKA Arm (think Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey) for a tour of the catacombs underneath the manor for a “tour” of the monsters holding sells. Of course, as is prone to happen, something “goes wrong” and Dracula leads an escape, turning the “tour” into a whirlwind battle between the escaped monsters and Victoria and her Frankenstein, with riders caught in the middle.
So, what are the ride’s scariest moments? Well, first, we need to talk about the monsters themselves. Monsters Unchained features a hybrid presentation using screens and massive animatronics to recreate the monsters. I’ve been visiting Disney and Universal theme parks for over 30 years, and I can confidently say these are some of the most intricate — and initially scariest — animatronics I’ve ever seen.

The ride features several physical versions of Dracula, as well as his vampire brides, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, the Phantom of the Opera, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Frankenstein. Each of the animatronics comes alarmingly close to the car, or at least appears to, swiping, threatening, and in the case of the Wolf Man, drooling on you. While I found these moments more exhilarating than frightening, I can definitely see how someone who’s uncomfortable with the monsters (or with 8-10 foot tall animatronics) being so close to them.

Beyond the monsters, there’s the ride vehicle itself. The KUKA arm technology allows riders to be quickly moved in multiple directions, including up, down, side to side, and even flat on your back. Fun Fact Spoiler: When you begin your ride, look up until the bell you pass under when flat. There’s a static figure of Universal’s version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, who appears as a blink and you’ll miss it cameo. While these vehicles are technologically impressive and smooth, the range of movement could be a problem for those prone to motion sickness. That said, by most accounts, the ride is better than Forbidden Journey in that regard.

Now that we’ve established what Monsters Unchained is, a quick word on what it’s not. Despite taking place inside a literal haunted house, the attraction is not a haunted house in the traditional Universal/Halloween Horror Nights sense. It’s more action than horror, and doesn’t really feature many (if any) traditional jump scares. In fact, most of the monster animatronics are visible just before their scenes, outside of the Creature from the Black Lagoon, who the vehicle sweeps down upon just after Dracula threatens riders after escaping. So, if those kinds of things frighten you, you shouldn’t have much to worry about.

Monsters Unchained is one of the most acclaimed rides at Epic Universe, but “scaredy cat” riders would be aware of exactly what they’re getting into before riding. Stay tuned to AllEars for more on Epic Universe!
