The New TSA Rule Starts Today — Here’s What You Need to Know

A big change has just occurred in the world of flying, but it’s one that’s been coming for quite some time.

After the 9/11 tragedy, the 9/11 Commission proposed the idea of REAL IDs, which is a “compliant state-issued license or identification card that Homeland Security says is a more secure form of identification,” and it was signed into law in 2005. While it was supposed to take effect in 2008, it’s been pushed back for years, but now, it’s finally happening. Here’s what you need to know if you’re flying from this moment on, and thankfully, you do NOT need to panic.

As of today, Wednesday, May 7th, you’ll now need a REAL ID when flying to go through security. A REAL ID is most often marked by a star in the upper corner of your license, and it’s something you need to go to the Department of Driver Services and get if your license doesn’t already have it; it won’t just be mailed to you.

However, according to ABC News, Homeland Security Chief Kristi Noem has said that while passengers may face additional steps, those without a REAL ID will still be able to fly at this time. They may be brought to a separate line and asked some more questions to confirm their identity, but they still will be able to fly.

Thankfully, 81% of the population currently has a form of identification that qualifies under the REAL ID requirements, which also includes passports and tribal identifications. Lines at Department of Motor Vehicle locations have been high all across the country as many people prepare for the change, and many locations extended their hours to accommodate the sheer number of people needing assistance.
