See INSIDE How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk at Epic Universe

We’re counting down the days till Epic Universe at Universal Studios Orlando opens, but we just got to step foot in How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk for the first time!

This land is inspired by the How to Train Your Dragon franchise and will be one of the five new areas to the third gate. Hiccup and Toothless are ready to show us this brand-new land!

Epic Universe will open on May 22nd, 2025, but we got the chance to step inside for the FIRST TIME today! The entrance to this land is INCREDIBLE and immediately took our breath away.

What really stands out to us are the dragon houses on the hill, and the spire is incredible. Just look at these details!

We also got a chance to walk by the ice dragon who is just hanging out in the land, and he does indeed breathe icy fog! There was no line to meet him when we were here — you could just walk right up and say hello.

Our first stop was The Untrainable Dragon show, which happens a few times throughout the day. We weren’t able to take any photos or videos inside the theater, but there are live instruments that are played during the show! The curtain has a light-up map of Berk with where dragons are located in relation to the land. We also saw tracks for dragons to fly, so we knew we’d be seeing that.

Now, the seating here is bench seating that is pretty wide and comes up to your mid-back, and while it’s very in-theme, don’t expect plush, cushy theater seats. We think this is an outstanding show, especially for kids, and it follows Hiccup as he attempts to train an untrainable dragon. The dragon puppet is INCREDIBLE and it’s massive, but when Toothless flies out, it’s one of those theme park moments that you’ll remember forever.

In fact, it’s one of those moments where a story you love really comes to life in front of your eyes. The theater fills with fog, and the screens show clouds, so it’s like you’re flying through clouds, and then all of a sudden, Toothless is flying above you with Hiccup on his back, and it’s truly unforgettable — it’s one of the most magical theme park moments we’ve ever had. The whole show had us in awe, and we don’t think we’ll ever forget that moment!

Isle of Berk is also home to 3 brand new attractions, including Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, a roller coaster replicating what it feels like to ride a dragon! Reaching speeds of 45 mph, we can’t wait to fly on this family coaster that invited “new Vikings to take a ride on his latest glider contraption.” We didn’t get to ride it today, but that just means our anticipation is high for next month!

The second attraction is Fyre Drill, which allows riders to shoot at targets while on their boat! The goal is to practice putting out fires those pesky dragons ignited. You’ll want to bring your raincoat before you hop on if you don’t want to get too wet! Again, we look forward to riding this in the near future.

Dragon Racer’s Rally is this land’s third attraction. You’ll practice your dragon-riding techniques by flying, rolling, and maneuvering in the sky! Riders will get to control whether they want a “wild” or “mild” experience. We’re really looking forward to trying it out at a later date!

Are your little ones ready to take on their own dragons? Viking Training Camp is a huge play area with its own “Viking agility course!” There are slides and bridges, and it looks like a great way for kids to burn off some energy.

And before you ask, yes, you’ll be able to meet heroes Hiccup and Toothless at Isle of Berk! Toothless looks spectacular, and we can’t wait to see him up close.

Isle of Berk also features Mead Hall, which is a sit-down restaurant location. This gathering hall will be filled with Viking tapestries and paintings and will serve fish, sandwiches, meat, and cider!

There’s also a quick-service location, Fyre Grill Hall. This eatery overlooks the Fyre Drill attraction and serves “hearty meals, flamed seared” by a dragon!

We also got a chance to see the outside of Hooligan Harbour Hideaway, which is close to the snack and beverage location, Hooligan’s Grog and Gruel.

Then it was time for the moment we’d waited for all — we got the opportunity to meet Toothless and Hiccup! This was a fantastic meet and greet, and honestly the actor’s Hiccup voice and demeanor was so spot on, we got a little nervous — it felt like we were REALLY interacting with the characters from the franchise we know and love.

But WAIT, there are more animatronics hidden around the land too — check out these adorable baby dragons fighting over fish!
