Traveling by plane can make getting to your destination much easier, but plane travel can also be frustrating. Flight delays and cancelations are never ideal, but travelers may soon be entitled to more compensation.
U.S. airlines may soon need to shell out cash to passengers affected by flight delays and cancelations. A new rule that would require cash compensation may be issued as soon as next year.
According to The Dallas Morning News, the Biden Administration is working on a rule that would “require U.S. airlines to provide compensation to passengers for controllable cancellations or delays of three hours or more.”
This new rules could be issued as soon as January 2025. The rule includes a compensation scheme that would require U.S. airlines to pay passengers “a set cash payment amount to each passenger on a disrupted flight, in addition to compensation for meals and lodging.”
This proposed rule is not a radical idea as many countries have had a similar rule implemented for a long time. The European Union has had a similar rule for the past 20 years and countries such as Canada, India, China, and Australia already have delay compensation rules in place as well.
The exact details of this proposed rule, including the amount of compensation, have not been worked out yet. With this proposed rule, the “Biden Administration’s ultimate goal is to incentivize the airlines to provide better service.”
