A Disneyland classic is almost ready to return.
The Disneyland Monorail has been a staple at the park since it debuted — as part of the so-called “Second Opening of Disneyland” — in 1959. Over the years it has evolved from simply a “ride” to a true method of transportation, connecting Disneyland’s Tomorrowland and Downtown Disney (formerly the Disneyland Hotel). Now, after a brief period of closure, the Monorail is coming back to Disneyland.
The Disneyland Monorail closed for refurbishment on August 12th. At the time, Disney said simply that the Monorail would be “expected to reopen later this year.” Now thanks to the Disneyland operations calendar, we know when the iconic attraction is scheduled to reopen.
According to the park’s calendar, the Monorail will return this Friday, the 13th (clearly Imagineering is not a superstitious bunch) with operating hours from 8:00AM to 12:00AM.
Following the 13th, the Monorail shows regular operating hours throughout September and early October, up to the 22nd (currently the final available date on the calendar).
According to legend, the idea for the Disneyland Monorail originated when Walt Dinsey saw an example of a monorail system while in Europe. The park’s version was the first built on American soil, and the current incarnation provides a 2.5-mile, 13-minute round-trip journey that allows guests to fly “over Fantasyland and Tomorrowland, past the majestic Matterhorn Bobsleds. Glide over Grizzly Peak, Buena Vista Street and Hollywood Land in Disney California Adventure Park. Zoom through Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and the Downtown Disney District.”
According to the Disneyland calendar, the iconic Disneyland Monorail is returning to the “Happiest Place on Earth” this coming Friday after a month-long layoff. Stay tuned to AllEars for further updates on Disneyland.
