Are you planning a trip to Disney World?

Are you flying into Orlando International Airport? If so, how are you getting to Disney World from there? If you’re renting a car, you might know that Florida has toll roads, meaning you’ll have to pay to drive on those roads to actually GET to Disney World. Now, there’s a sneaky fee car rental companies might charge you to help you get through the toll roads, and we want to warn you about it.
If you rent a car, you may be given the option to use the rental company’s transponder, which could end up adding extra charges (in addition to tolls) to your car rental bill. However, you don’t need the transponder: in July, the Central Florida Expressway Authority started to issue toll passes to those who rent cars at Orlando International Airport.

You can now download an app, register using a credit card, and get a toll pass at the airport that will be a QR code you can hang from your rearview mirror. This temporary toll pass will allow you to avoid the extra fees that come with using a rental car agency’s transponder. You can pick up your toll pass at one of several vending machines you’ll find near the airport’s rental car counters.

Using the toll pass requires an initial deposit of $10, which is used to pay for tolls. After that initial $10 is used, your credit card is charged each time you go through a toll booth. If you don’t use the full $10, you’ll be refunded the leftover balance when you return your tag. Tags can be returned at drop boxes that can be found around the airport — if you forget to return them, you’ll be charged a fine of $10.

When you’re offered the use of a transponder or payment service at the rental car agency, say “no.” You may also need to make sure the toll transponder in your rental car is set to the closed or nonpayment position.
So if you’re renting a car from Orlando International Airport, keep this in mind and save yourself some money.
