We’ve seen some unique theme park ideas before, but this one may take the cake!

We tend to talk A LOT about ideas and aspects of theme parks that we find interesting — everything from myths people believe about Disney World to strange ride rules at Universal, but anything we’ve ever talked about that was perplexing before PALES in comparison to what we’ve just uncovered!
A new resort and entertainment district is under construction in Saudi Arabia. That’s the most normal part you’ll hear about this place. The interesting part begins when you realize it’s all being built on an oil rig! This theme park might strike you as odd on the surface, but when you find out the rich history behind it, you’ll be just as intrigued as we are.

“THE RIG.” is currently planned to be a world-first adventure tourism destination that will be built on an offshore platform in the Arabian Gulf. The idea for THE RIG. came to life as one of Public Investment Fund’s (PIF) entertainment projects. PIF recently announced the launch of its Masterplan THE RIG., in which they’re looking to set an “ambitious and unprecedented vision for tourism” — redefining adventure tourism.

The project aligns with PIF’s strategy and the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 objectives of “contributing to the growth of the tourism sector, directly and indirectly contributing to employment opportunities and diversifying the economy,” as stated on their website.

THE RIG. draws inspiration from the design of offshore oil platforms, to celebrate the legacy and heritage of Saudi Arabia’s long-spanning oil and gas history. The one-of-a-kind resort and “adventure experience” will span a gross floor area of over 300,000 square meters making it a massive undertaking. It’s planned to be located 40 kilometers from the Saudi Arabia coastline, near Al Juraid Island and Berri Oil Field in the Arabian Gulf.

How does THE RIG. plan to usher so many visitors out to its over-the-sea destination? They’ve got multiple options lined up. Visitors will be ushered to the unique destination by ferry, seaplane, or helicopter with a maximum travel time one way estimated at 90 minutes.
THE RIG. estimates they will be able to successfully welcome 900,000 annual visitors by 2032, appealing to travelers far and wide including adrenaline seekers, explorers, leisure travelers, and relaxation seekers.

The range of resort space, leisure, entertainment, and accommodation options provided onboard THE RIG. adventure destination is set to include three hotels totaling 800 rooms…

… along with 11 restaurants, an extreme sports & adventure park…

… a world-class marina, and helipads.

THE RIG. is looking to add a wide variety of water activities, including a diving center, an amusement park, a splash park, an E-sports center, an immersive theater, and a multipurpose arena to its entertainment options. THE RIG. will also seek to educate and celebrate the Kingdom’s long-standing oil and gas heritage by creating an exceptional experience, declaring it a must-see destination.

The project will be overseen by the Oil Park Development Company (OPDC) with guidance from its CEO, Raed N. Bakhrji. Bakhrji has more than 20 years of experience in the oil & gas industry along with a passion for the future of adventure tourism and what may come next.
