What Went Wrong With ‘The Marvels’ Movie? Analysts Chime In

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the most popular Disney franchises, but it’s also one of the most complex.

With more plot-intertwining movies and episodes than we can count, it’s safe to say that it can take a lot of time and patience to fully understand the films, as it takes quite a bit of background research. Those who have been devoted to Marvel since the get-go were highly anticipating the release of the all-new film, The Marvels, a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel. However, the film was a box office FLOP. Let’s talk about it!

The Marvels debuted in theaters on November 10th, 2023, and broke records as the WORST-PERFORMING movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Domestically, the film grossed only $47 million. So… what went wrong?

Well, according to the Wall Street Journal, this flop of a film was expected. The low performance highlights a problem presented by Disney CEO Bob Iger at the final earnings call of 2024: the studios are rolling out too may films, focusing on quantity over quality. In other words, the content being produced isn’t as engaging as it is plentiful. It can also be overwhelming, especially for new fans!

This idea was backed up by Tony Chambers, Disney’s head of theatrical distribution, who said that the movie’s performance was “definitely not what we expected and not what we’ve hoped for,” and later said that the creative force behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe is hoping to find the right balance in content produced, whether that be for the big screen or for streaming platforms.

Iger shared at the earnings call that one of the main focuses for 2024 was to bring creativity back to the studios and to further enhance the streaming and film industry. Hopefully, Disney can find an appropriate balance between rolling out new content as well as building on beloved stories that fans already hold dear.

  1. For what its worth, it is not a bad film, and a Marvel flop is still better than a lot of movies in theaters. There is just a bit of MCU fatigue right now, and Disney/Marvel seems to be throwing out a lot of characters right now and seeing which ones will be popular enough to replace the Infinity Saga’s Avengers.

Iman Vellani absolutely stole the show, and I hope we see more of her moving forward in the MCU.

  2. I just went to The Marvels last night and really enjoyed it! My thoughts were quite opposite of what is stated here in this article. The movie had great characters, great story line, some humor, much different than the recent releases of the Marvel Universe. I encourage all to go see it in the theater and decide for yourselves.
