The annual San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) is a mecca for pop culture enthusiasts, drawing fans from all corners of the globe to celebrate their love for comics, movies, TV shows, and more. Among the myriad of attractions at the convention, one particular highlight that consistently steals the show is the Funko booths.
As the world’s leading pop culture collectibles company, Funko’s presence at SDCC has become an eagerly anticipated spectacle for collectors, enthusiasts, and fans alike.
A Feast for the Eyes: Showcasing the Latest and Greatest
Walking into the Funko booths at SDCC 2023, attendees were greeted by a visual feast like no other. Towering displays welcomed guests to “Funkoville”–the “funnest city in the USA!” Double the size of the 2022 Funko area, Funkoville included a donut shop, bowling alley, Loungefly boutique and Mondo gas station, where avid consumers could find the newest and con-exclusive merchandise from Funko.com, FunkoGames.com, Loungefly.com, and Mondoshop.com.
A new addition was the Blockbuster Rewind video store, which allowed fans to time travel to the ‘90s and enjoy the nostalgia of the new VHS-themed product line from Funko in collaboration with Blockbuster.
SDCC Exclusives: The Hunt is On
Part of the allure of visiting the Funko booths at SDCC is the chance to snag exclusive items that are only available at the convention. This year was no exception, with a lineup of limited-edition figures that had collectors buzzing with excitement.
Pop! Yourself: A Look Ahead
AllEars was invited by Funko to experience their upcoming product line, Pop! Yourself. This new technology allows people to build custom Pop! figures of themselves or anyone they choose, exactly the way they want them.
Using a computer interface much like designing a character for a video game, builders create a 3-D model of their Pop! which ultimately yields a printout of all the chosen elements. After turning it in, the produced figure is shipped directly to its new home.
Now available in the U.S., Pop! Yourself is available online and at Funko’s stores in both Everett, WA, and Hollywood, CA.
Community and Camaraderie: A Shared Passion
Beyond the merchandise, one of the most rewarding aspects of visiting the Funko booths at SDCC was the sense of camaraderie among attendees. Funko collectors, known as “Funatics,” from different walks of life came together to share their passion, trade figures, and bond over mutual interests. Dave Beré, VP of Brand & Marketing for Funko, was generous enough to talk to AllEars about Funko’s goals to create a sense of connection with their fans through their convention installations, their portfolio of different brands, and their new personalized Pop! Yourself project.

The Pops Live On
As the curtains close on another successful San Diego Comic-Con, the memory of Funko’s vibrant booths and exclusive offerings will linger in the hearts of fans until the next event. For many, SDCC 2023 was a testament to Funko’s unwavering commitment to pop culture and its ability to bring popular characters to life in the most delightful way imaginable.
With each passing year, Funko’s presence at SDCC continues to evolve and impress, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what they have in store for the future. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a newcomer to the world of Funko, one thing is for certain: The Funko booths at San Diego Comic-Con will always be a can’t-miss spectacle that embodies the magic of pop culture fandom.
