Is Goofy a Cow or a Dog?

Goofy is certainly a beloved Disney character!

But unlike some of Disney’s other popular characters that are mice, ducks, and dogs, some people find what type of animal Goofy is a mystery.

So today, we’re attempting to answer this question once and for all: Is Goofy a cow or a dog?

Some Disney fans do assert that Goofy is a cow, based on his on-again, off-again relationship with Clarabelle Cow, who is clearly … well, a cow. One of Minnie’s best friends, Clarabelle is portrayed as Goofy’s love interest in the series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and she also demonstrates an interest in Goofy in Mickey and the Roadster Racers.

But other than this on-again, off-again relationship with Clarabelle, little evidence exists that Goofy is a cow. The Oxford Companion to Children’s Literature lists Goofy as “a dog in Disney cartoons,” and since our first glimpse of this character — in a 1930s comic strip — was under a different name — Dippy Dawg — we do have to assume that Goofy is a dog.

He is an anthropomorphic dog, though — which makes him different than the clearly-a-dog Pluto, who does not speak (well, he’s been known to say “yeah”) and is Mickey’s pet.

Disney plays it fast and loose with its rules about the characters in its universe, and they have evolved through the years. Perhaps the reason we are confused about whether Goofy is a cow or a dog is because his name does not include his species. Think about it — we have Mickey and Minnie MOUSE, Donald and Daisy DUCK, Clarabelle COW, Horace HORSEcollar…

Regardless of his spot in the animal kingdom, Goofy has a beloved place in many Disney fans’ hearts as one of the Fab 5. He has been immortalized in comic strips, TV series, and film, as well as on merchandise, and even in an EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival topiary…
