We’ve got some BIG news from Universal!
Universal has brought some exciting headlines recently with announcements of their NEW theme park in Texas and of course, updates on EPIC Universe, their newest theme park being built in Orlando. But now, they’re creating a new live-action movie based on a beloved animation movie series!
It seems How to Train Your Dragon will be getting another movie, but this time, it will be live-action! According to the Hollywood Reporter, Dean DeBlois, the original filmmaker for the animated series, is going to be writing, directing, and producing the new film.
The original animated films were made by DreamWorks and were very popular at the box office. The animated trilogy of movies brought in more than $1.6 BILLION in theaters, so we think fans could be very excited about getting another movie in the franchise.
The project is already in the development process and sources have indicated that the casting process is getting started too. The live-action film is currently set to release on March 14th, 2025 (though, of course, things could change).
Would this be a retelling of the original story or a completely NEW experience in the same world? Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it would adapt the trilogy of movies that were made by DreamWorks years ago. So it seems to be more of a live-action remake, along the lines of what we’ve seen Disney doing a lot lately.
In case you’re unfamiliar with these movies, they used books by Cressida Cowell as a jumping-off point and follow the “special friendship between a young and unheroic Viking boy named Hiccup and Toothless, an injured dragon he nurses back to health.” It’s a coming-of-age story with all kinds of challenges and love thrown in along the way.
The live-action film is set to also feature the help of Marc Platt who will produce the film.
It is interesting to see this development considering How to Train Your Dragon is one of the films RUMORED to be getting a land themed to it in the new Epic Universe theme park in Orlando.
It’s possible that this live-action film could reinvigorate the property and really get people excited to visit the new park if in fact the How to Train Your Dragon land is built there. The timing also matches up well since Epic Universe is set to open in time for summer 2025.

I do not know how to feel about this. With the exception of Cinderella, I think most of the Disney Live Actions have been pretty bad. I realize this won’t be done by Disney, but I’m afraid it’s result will be similar. And How to Train Your Dragon is my favorite movie! I’m still mad it lost Best Animated Feature to Toy Story 3 lol. I’ll give it a shot though.
