‘Coco,’ ‘Encanto,’ and VILLAINS Themed Lands Could Come to Magic Kingdom in Disney World

Stop what you’re doing. We have huge (and we mean HUGE) Disney news.

Are you ready for some big news???

It’s D23 Expo time which means that Disney is making all kinds of announcements, like an opening timeline for the TRON: Lightcycle Run ride and more details about the Tiana’s Bayou Adventure re-theme for Splash Mountain, and they just dropped the biggest news bomb of all — NEW lands that could open in Magic Kingdom!

Disney just announced that a BIG expansion is coming to Magic Kingdom in Disney World.

Cinderella Castle

Chairperson of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products, Josh D’Amaro, announced that Disney is exploring what could be “beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad” as part of the BIGGEST Magic Kingdom expansion yet. Mentioned as potentially being part of the project were lands themed to Coco and Encanto

Disney showed new concept art with areas that look like the town square from Coco and the magical Casa Madrigal from Encanto. Disney asked, “What if you could walk into the Madrigals’ casita? What if Mirabel is your guide? What if you could walk up to a door, and discover your own magical gift?” We might see some of those ideas come to life in the new lands!

D’Amaro also teased a new VILLAINS-themed land that could be coming to Magic Kingdom as well! Disney said, “We love to hate, and sometimes love to adore, obsessively love to adore … our villains.” They mentioned that a land overrun by some favorite Disney baddies could also be part of the new expansion in the park.

Disney did not share an opening timeline yet, and they mentioned that these new lands are in the very early stages of development. We’ll be watching closely for more details, but in the meantime, you can read more about another upcoming attraction, TRON Lightcycle Run, by clicking here!

  1. Always the pessimist, but I remember the coaster park that was in early planning stages over a decade ago, and hasn’t come to fruition. Don’t forget also that Disney has rarely, if EVER, built everything that’s in their original plans, such as the mythical creature section in AK. Always cutbacks due to budget constraints and such. All I ask from Disney is give me back original parkhopping and
fastpasses and I’ll be happy to once again be a frequent returning customer. I was very pleased with the original fastpass system where anyone who got up and got in the park could get in line for a fastpass. Couldn’t have been any simpler or fairer.

  2. This was nothing mire than to try and divert attention away from Epic Universe that is actually being built and could open in 18 months! Disney is desperate!

  3. This would be absolutely amazing! I’m surprised that the crowd didn’t completely erupt from this news. This is what people have been waiting for, but they were a little slow to react. I think everyone seems a little skeptical about promises of new things these days.

    1. Me too, Sean! I would love a dark castle type building with Maleficent in dragon form blowing fire (like the dragon at Gringotts over in Universal)!

      1. Yes…Villains please. That’s always been the ONLY idea that would simultaneously keep the integrity of the park as well as think outside the box for something new. Lots of great opportunities with attractions and characters here. A Villains land could sample from across the Disney portfolio without the need to build entire lands that spoon feed diversity. Heck, they could move the Brer characters over here now that they’re considered “villainous” in the current landscape!
