Let’s be real, Disney holds some pretty serious power over our wallets.

Especially when it comes to Disney merchandise! Sometimes it can feel like there are always new Minnie ears, mugs, and exclusive merchandise both inside and outside of the parks. It turns out that all of those merchandise sales have officially earned Disney the top spot on the world’s list of licensors!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Walt Disney Co.’s Disney Consumer Products was the top licensor in the world in 2021, selling $56.2 billion in licensed merchandise worldwide. That’s up from the $54 billion it made in 2020. Coming in second place on the list was Dotdash Meredith (a digital media company) at $35.9 billion, meaning Disney beat its closest competitor by $18 billion dollars.

Essentially, this means that Disney made the most money from licensed merchandise than any other company in the world. That merchandise includes both their own items (sold directly by Disney) and items from any other company that uses the Disney brand (like Funko POPs).

Social influencers are now a common way to entice the general public to buy merchandise from a company, but many companies still rely on storefronts. Some large corporations, like Netflix, have even followed in Disney’s footsteps and opened up online stores for their merchandise.
