The holiday season is a big time for travel, and this year airlines have run into some major issues.
Over 3,000 flights were canceled before Christmas due to weather issues and the rise of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, and airlines continue to be impacted as flight cancellations and delays are on the rise.
According to CNN, over 2,000 flights were canceled today globally and more than 6,500 flights have been delayed. This comes after over 6,000 flights were canceled worldwide between December 24th to the 26th.
CNN reports that the airline industry is being affected by the rise of Omicron, as airline staff and crew members have been calling out sick in high numbers. United Airlines announced in a memo, “The nationwide spike in Omicron cases this week has had a direct impact on our flight crews and the people who run our operation.”
NBC News reported that Delta Airlines attributed flight cancelations to “winter weather in portions of the U.S. and the Omicron variant.” These issues are coinciding with an exceptionally busy time, as according to CNN, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported screening 2.19 million people on December 23rd, 2021, which is more people than the same day in 2019.

We are SO bummed. Our flight got cancelled out of Washington State yesterday after spending 6 1/2 hours on the plane on the tarmac. A few hours later the entire airport got shut down. My son and I have been planning this dream trip to Disney World for a long time. Now I’m just hoping Disney will work with us to rebook. So sad!
